Cultural and Social Issues in Transport – SIG G4 Call for Papers for WCTRS 2026

The Cultural and Social Issues in Transport Special Interest Group explores how social and cultural factors influence people’s mobility needs, and requirements for mobility, and how mobility systems influence societies and cultures. This includes, but is not limited to work on:
  • How social and cultural factors influence how and when people need to travel
  • The ways in which mobility systems can facilitate or impede social relations and cultural development
  • The role that mobility can have in development and change in social and economic practices
  • Approaches to identifying overlooked research questions regarding social and cultural issues in mobility
  • Methodological developments for investigating social and cultural issues, including ethnographic and participatory approaches to improve understanding and responsiveness to cultural and social issues in mobility
We invite papers which fall within the scope of topics listed above. We are especially interested in papers which:
  • Identify new and emerging research questions and topics for social and cultural issues in transport
  • Present methodological developments for investigating social and cultural issues
  • Develop theory and concepts related to social and cultural issues in transport
  • Report empirical studies, especially studies with participants from groups who have not been well-represented in transport studies to date.
